startup shortcuts Mac Pro 2010 not working

My old Mac Pro early 2010 with High Sierra (on SSD) seems to have retired. Past months getting sluggish, Finder hangs, etc.

Thought I run Recovery mode (Cmnd + r) at upstart. Didn't work. Ended up at user home screen. Tried startup in safe mode (shift). Same result. Tried verbose (Cmnd + v). Same again.

Tried reboot via Terminal in various ways. No luck.

Disconnected power for an hour. Didn't help.

As I assume, it's a hardware issue. Either the SDRAM (I have 16Gb x 4) or the core (don't know what's it's called, but I mean the source that runs during boot and e.g. select startup disk) of the Mac.

I know, I should get a new Mac. But I can't fork out $10,000. I need to stick to my old, faithful servant.

Any suggestions?

To use those startup 'snag keys', your wired USB keyboard must be direct-connected to a port on the chassis, not on a display or other USB dock. Otherwise, the dock comes up too late for the keys to be seen.
