Mac Mini 2018 Sonoma 14.0 - Allow Airplay is not showing on "Airdrop & Handoff"

Hi, on my Mac Mini I can't find The "Allow Airplay" icon, in order to enable it. I have always been able to stream the audio from my browser, now it's not working.

I'm missing point 5) to 9). Why?

You can enable AirPlay Receiver to receive audio and video content from your Mac or other Apple device on the same network. To check AirPlay Receiver settings on your macOS Sonoma, follow these steps:

  1. On your Mac, click on the Apple menu icon at the top-left corner.
  2. From the pop-up menu, select System Settings.
  3. Click on the General in the left sidebar.
  4. Next, click AirDrop & Handoff on the right side.
  5. Here, enable AirPlay Receiver and click the pop-up menu next to “Allow Airplay for.”
  6. Select whose devices can use AirPlay to stream content to this Mac:
  7. Current User: This means that the devices signed in to your Apple ID can use AirPlay to stream content to this Mac.
  8. Anyone on the Same Network: This means any nearby Mac, iPhone or iPad can use AirPlay on the same network.
  9. Everyone: This allows you to use AirPlay on any Mac, iPhone, or iPad to stream content to this Mac.

We suggest you select the “Everyone” option, so you can use AirPlay on your Mac and as well as other Apple devices. After that, try checking if the issue has been resolved. If the issue persists, try the next solution.

Any help, please?

I have the same problem and the solution above doesn't solve the problem. I believe it is a general bug in Sonoma (14.0) that affects how AirPlay interacts with various Apple/non-Apple apps on your Mac. I have also a 2018 MacMini and didn't have any AirPlay issues pre-Sonoma, I could stream anything to my Sonos speakers, incl. sound from videos on various websites, sound from mp4 movies via QuickTime player. It boils down to the fact that AirPlay in Sonoma only works if the application (e.g. the embedded video in a webbrowser) shows you the AirPlay icon. If there is no icon AirPlay won't work in Sonoma. You can select your AirPlay enabled device that is listed in your output list in the menu bar all day long - it doesn't have any impact. A couple of examples how AirPlay broke in Sonoma:

  • Using Firefox, Safari, or Chrome as your bowser go to any embedded video (e.g. on ccn.com) and try to get sound (besides the internal macmini speakers). You can pick in my case Sonos as the AirPaly device but there is no sound because the embedded video doesn't give you an AirPlay icon
  • You you pick a video on youtube.com interesting enough using Safari it gives you the AirPlay icon in the video (and Airplay using Sonos works), but not if you use Chrome or Firefox.

The overarching bug in Sonoma is that selecting an AirPlay device as your sound output via the menu bar doesn't work.
