I just want to play Blu-ray movies on my MacBook Pro (M1)!

Soon after buying my current MacBook Pro, I found an occasional need for an external optical drive - and wanted to be able to even less frequently play a movie on this MBP. Found an external that actually worked quite well (and also burns a variety of discs).

But It's been months since I last used it - so I pulled it out to watch a recently purchased Blu-ray and while the drive is recognized and the disc shows with a generic (blank)icon - there is no longer anything on my MBP that will open/play this commercial disc.

I know Apple made the decision long ago to simply ignore the optical storage realm - but good grief -

SO - I'm looking for help in bringing back the ability to watch a disc on my MBP. The drive doesn't seem to be the issue - but the lack of codecs and/or software with the ability. Even more frustrating - the App store leaves MUCH to be desired - with the most feature-rich apps being rather costly - and all extremely low-rated.

I don't mind paying a little for something that actually works - but I need some pointers - anyone have recommendations?
