Sound output depending on sound input sounds bad or stops, input has to be changed manually back and forth to solve problem

When I'm listening to music using my Earpods or an external sound device, I have to manually make sure, that sound input is set to internal (built in microphone). If I connect an external speaker it will automatically change the input to that device, too. Reasonable in some cases but annoying when you have to change it back. Why do I have to change it? Because the sound is awful bad when another input than the internal speakers are chosen. So far.

Now it appears, that the sound will just stop from time to time without reason (as I can see any) and I have to manually change the input from internal to external and back. After doing this the sound will continue playing over the chosen external device.
