If lag is an issue, get a regular external monitor. It is the only solution that guarantees lag will not ruin your computing life.
There are videos online showing noticeable lag even with Airplay to Mac, mentioned in that article. Lag may not be a problem for regular typing but could make you loopy with other input-senstive tasks like photo- or video-editing, page layout, or gaming.

Apple began the deprecation of TDM in late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in Early 2020.
