Gmail desktop widget not showing up in Sonoma (but Google Calendar does)

I'm on a MacMini Pro M2 and Sonoma.

I'm using an ultrawide monitor and want to have a Gmail widget on my desktop so that I can see the preview text of any recent emails without having to open a new browser or tab and log into my Gmail account.

However, when I edit the widgets, Gmail does not appear. Google Calendar does appear and the widget gives me a brief update of upcoming calendar events.

I understand that there is no Gmail app for MacOS. However, I just want the preview function as I have with Google Calendar.

Already tried rebooting my iPhone 14 ProMax (already updated to latest software), MacMini, and deleting/re-adding the Gmail app. Nothing seems to make Gmail show up in the Widgets section on MacOS Sonoma.

Your hands may be tied here— you can contact Gmail Help

maybe they will come up with a Gmail app for MacOS in light of the new Desktop Widgets feature...
