Incomplete install from App Store Monterey installer

I am running Monterey and I want to install it on an external drive. I download the Monterey installer from the App Store. I run the installer onto a volume on the external drive. After the installation completes, instead of booting into the new system as I would expect, the system boots into the current version of Monterey. The Monterey installer is open. It says to complete installation click Continue. I click continue and select the external volume on which I just installed Monetary. I can't run onto that because of this

So basically it wants me to start again and repeat the failed process.

What is the model of this Mac? If it has a T2 chip (as most of the latest Intel since about 2018), you will need to run Startup Security from Recovery, and lower the level to allow external booting at all. I am not sure how it works on an Apple Silicon Mac.

The security is set to reduced for all systems. I'm on an M1 MBP.

I try it again. I'm asked to copy the ownership from the system drive.

I'm asked to enter the password. I enter it. The dialog closes. Nothing happens. No installation starts.

I won't be able to try this on an Apple Silicon mac anytime soon.

I may be able to try it on my Intel MBP with T2, but I don't know if the two will work the same way. Anyway, I won't be able to do it until probably the weekend.

Thank you Luis. Be careful as you may damage the system. The Monterey system that I was running now will not allow it to be assigned as the boot drive because it says there was no authorized user. I went into recovery to authorize the user, but the system still said there was no authorized user. I had to boot into a Ventura system to authorize the user. I think it’s correctly authorized now, but there is no way to tell. The whole installation system is completely opaque. Installation from recovery is a complete failure. I have never been able to make it work on any system.
