Switching from Intel Mac with OS on ext SSD to M2

Hi.

I have an old Mac Mini i5 from 2012 and tonget more juice out of it I created a bootable ext SSD to hold the OS

Yesterday I bought a new Mac Mini M2.

I want to start fresh and install all my music daws and plugins from new downloads but I was hoping I could pull my user ID etc from the ext SSD my old OS is booted from using migration assistant. Is this possible by plugging in the ext SSD to the M2 or do I have to put the OS back on the old Mac and do it that way?

I usually do the migration manually. I have a bootable CCC clone and just Finder-copy all my data files to the cleanly installed system. That needs some planning ahead and a routine where to keep and find important and not so important files. And to remember to copy some application data files from ~/Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Mail, application prefs from ~/Library/Preferences, application license numbers etc.

There is no need to go through that hassle but I like to know where things are stored and do a spring cleaning after major upgrades. Rest of the family use Migration assistant and it seems to do a good job.
