Thunderbolt display keeps switching off when connected with macbook pro 2017 running ventura 13.6

Currently, Thunderbolt will only work continuously when mirroring laptop screen with lid open.

All sleep and energy saving settings are off or never.

Thunderbolt is connected via apple USB-c adapter.

How can I use Thunderbolt screen with laptop lid closed and sleep settings enabled?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.6

I am using Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter model A1790 EAAC 3062.

This configuration always worked flawlessly until OS Monterey when the monitor would work but switch off after a few hours work without warning causing an architecture dump error.

With Ventura I can only work in screen mirror mode and with the lid open.
