Preview not saving edited photos (JPEGs) on MacBook running OSX 14.0 (Sonoma)

It seems that since updating my MacBook Pro (2019 16") to the latest version of OSX (Sonoma 14.0), the preview application refuses to save any photo that has been edited, presenting the following (rubbish and unhelpful) message: "The document xxx could not be autosaved" followed by "Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved. You can also duplicate the document or discard your changes to close it." However, even if I duplicate the file, the same erroneous message appears.

There is no reason why these files cannot be edited, as immediately prior to upgrading to the new OSX, it worked perfectly well, as expected on other similar files.

So basically, Preview now appears to be useless for making any edits to any photo (JPEG) files.

Thanks guys!

Same problem here. I've used Preview for as long as it has existed. I scan a jpg document, make changes and the ****** thing won't save. I can print it, I can print to pdf but when I try to save it says it can't be done and then tells me to duplicate, which it then DOES NOT DO it! No duplicate exists. I've been trying to make it work for over 2 weeks now, and this just began with the last update. Who messed this thing up? Now I have to put it in Photoshop, make edits, change it save it, and transfer it to Preview to finish up for pdf export (only because that pdf export works better). It is a mess completely FUBAR!

Same problem here on Sonoma 14.1.2. Cannot save a cropped JPG image with cryptic error message "The document could not be autosaved." This after attempting to manually save the file. After attempting to duplicate the file, get error message "The operation could not be completed." Export to a different JPG file name in a different folder locations fails with "Could not be exported". Office apps are able to save, so problem appears to be due to an issue with Preview.

The only thing that worked for me was taking a screen shot of the image that has been edited. It did save my changes. Also exporting to PDF and back to JPEG works but too confusing. I read somewhere Apple isn't supporting 8 bit grayscale. Is this true?

Property inspector won't allow you to change to RGB which would be what to do. RGB isn't in the drop-down menu. Any suggestions on how to apply a new profile? Could the app Color Sync work and what are the steps to do it.

I just updated to OS 14.2 The Problem with Preview got WORSE. Before I would edit my photos and it wouldn't save them. NOW it won't even let me edit them, the "tools" are greyed out!

I do fairly intense photo editing and use other tools, but frequently all I need is Preview to slightly adjust the contrast or temperature and I don't need to open the pic in full blown photo editing software.

What the heck, Apple??? Why is Preview not working???

PS, although I appreciate the work-arounds listed above (export as pdf and re-import as jpg) that's ridiculous for my work.

Exporting saved photo as a PDF, then back as a jpeg, This option worked, but, it's not an ideal workaround. Apple could not help on this first attempt other than suggesting that I have the latest version, which I do, and then reloading operational software, they didn't even seem to know this was an issue, Not doing that just yet. Like everyone else replying, I noticed this started on recent software updates beginning with 14.2 I believe.

not unlikely at all- I am scanning many years' worth of black and white negatives (for which I don't want colour information) so the scanner is set at 16 bit greyscale which is good enough for a first pass on all of the film and then if there are any good frames I can redo those with more detail later. I am having the same issue with autosave not working on greyscale but any colour files from scanned colour negatives or slides are still autosaving properly. I usually only use Finder to rotate the images to the correct orientation, any other editing is in photoshop or Lightroom. I'm currently on Sonoma 14.2.1 anyway

Tried this, but there is no "Match to Profile" nor any dropdown menu anywhere in Preview application, (only an "Assign Profile" option under the Tools menu - but the options are only 2 profiles, both of which are grey based (no colour)).

In the ColorSync (that should really be "ColourSync" if Apple claims to be using English!!), there are plenty of "Profiles" (under that tab) for System, Computer, User and Other, but I don't think this is where you mean (and how does that affect the image opened in Preview)?

It seems that this problem (which despite OSX updates, continues), is only a problem with B&W images opened in Preview. I think that it is behaving OK with colour images.

I had to resort to using the (free) GIMP software, which is a much more powerful and complex (and difficult to understand) imaging application, but this does seem like a sledgehammer to crack a nut approach.

Frankly, Preview shouldn't be presenting us with this cryptic error at all - it never used to.

APPLE: Please fix this bug - I'm clearly not the only one getting this irritating error (still).
