Preview not saving edited photos (JPEGs) on MacBook running OSX 14.0 (Sonoma)

It seems that since updating my MacBook Pro (2019 16") to the latest version of OSX (Sonoma 14.0), the preview application refuses to save any photo that has been edited, presenting the following (rubbish and unhelpful) message: "The document xxx could not be autosaved" followed by "Your changes will not be saved until the problem is resolved. You can also duplicate the document or discard your changes to close it." However, even if I duplicate the file, the same erroneous message appears.

There is no reason why these files cannot be edited, as immediately prior to upgrading to the new OSX, it worked perfectly well, as expected on other similar files.

So basically, Preview now appears to be useless for making any edits to any photo (JPEG) files.

Thanks guys!

I upgraded to 14.3 2 days ago, and my problems (color only, I haven't really used greyscale - however the problems I was experiencing were the SAME) - 14.3 seems to have solved the problem and it's apparently an important security update.

Hi there. The files are scanned photos currently in the 'downloads' folder (they will be moved once I can edit them). Interestingly, it seems that Preview allows me to edit photos (that I had already edited previously - there were a lot of scanned photos and I had not completed the process when I upgraded the OSX). However, according to the Properties, both versions give me read & write access.

I am also having the same problem with Sonoma 14.1.1 As The Speakologist indicated, previously scanned photos can be edited via Preview but since upgrading to OS Sonoma, it is a problem. Additionally, I now see the words Stand Alone in the left hand corner beside the Apple symbol when I scan photos whereas previously it indicated Epson scanner during the scanning process. I have a MacBook 2022.

I just updated to OS 14.2 The Problem with Preview got WORSE. Before I would edit my photos and it wouldn't save them. NOW it won't even let me edit them, the "tools" are greyed out!

I do fairly intense photo editing and use other tools, but frequently all I need is Preview to slightly adjust the contrast or temperature and I don't need to open the pic in full blown photo editing software.

What the heck, Apple??? Why is Preview not working???

PS, although I appreciate the work-arounds listed above (export as pdf and re-import as jpg) that's ridiculous for my work.
