AirTag notifications

My son is young and doesn’t have a phone yet but we have started letting him go places without us and I feel more comfortable having an AirTag in his backpack or on his person while he’s out and about. Will it notify the parent or adult he is with that my AirTag is following them while he is with them? And is there a way to avoiding that? If no way to turn that notification off, I feel like that’s awkward to have them be notified —do I disclose each time?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 16

Yes. An AirTag that is not near its host (your) iPhone, will start beeping after a period of time. In addition, as you suspected, any other iPhone within Bluetooth range (around 30') of it will get a notification that an AirTag is present. They would also get a notification if that tag is "following" them.

And is there a way to avoiding that?

Sorry, but no. That is the way they are designed to work. They are meant to assist you with locating a missing item. They are not designed for tracking people or pets. You may find that an alternative device, that relies on GPS, would be a better solution for this.

If no way to turn that notification off

Yes, but only for you. Apple provides you with a means to disable you getting notifications when the tag is at certain locations. However, it does not disable notifications for other iPhones.

That is totally understandable, but again, you may want to seek another solution. Otherwise, if you wish to continue to use your AirTag for this purpose, you should let whomever you expect your child to be with that you placed a tag in his backpack.
