Batch Overlaying Images

I work with a lot of images and quite often need to overlay 30 to 40 images over the same background. I currently use a script within Photoshop to help do this. However, this is quite slow as I have to wait for Photoshop to finish the task each time.

Please could I have some recommendations of how I could achieve this, so that the task runs in the background and I can continue to use Photoshop or setup another job to overlay.

If it used Mac Automator would be ideal as I use it for other tasks.

Usual tools here are Adobe PhotoShop, ImageMagick, GIMP, and such.

I’d suggest also asking in the Adobe forums if you’re inclined to use that tool, and particularly around whatever performance issues you’re encountering with your existing script.

Here is a previous (general) discussion: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/how-to-bulk-add-background-to-various-photos/td-p/10158531

That mentions File > Automate > Batch and File > Scripts > Image Processor, which is probably what you’re using. (I’d doubt that AppleScript interacting with Photoshop will be faster than that, too.)

As an alternative, here is a write-up on GIMP and BIMP: https://thegimptutorials.com/how-to-do-batch-processing/
