Cannot use terminal

Hello, I have taken a computer Science class and when asked to run a java program using the terminal, I found that it didn’t works as my classmates. I do not have any message when open terminal with mu session name and everything. Any command i write are unresponsive. Terminal basically acts like a notepad.

I do not know what to do to be able to run my program through terminal.

Can someone help?

Thanks in advance!!

That is Terminal instance is not working correctly. That window has no command line prompt (typically percent-sign) and is running cat.

Choose 'New Window' off Terminal's Shell menu.

across the header of the Terminal window is home directory -- current shell -- windowsize in characters.

You are showing "Terminal" as the current directory. (that is nonsense)

you are showing "cat" as the current shell. (also nonsense)

your window size is just fine.

Your Terminal instance is all messed up.

In addition, you are not getting a user prompt to enter a command, you are 'just typing' -- no command interpreter is looking at what you type.

I suggest you quit Terminal and launch Terminal again, and see if you get something better. If not, you have likely buggered up your shell initialization script, and it will take some work to get it back to what it should be.

What command are you entering?

Please be accurate ... copy and paste the command from the source. often when you type a command it's not unusual to miss a required space. Especially if you're not used to typing commands and are unfamiliar with the command structure.

If you were attempting to us "cd" to change directory, that won't work. Terminal is not like Windows DOS prompt.

Thank you for the screenshot.

Open a New Terminal Window:

  1. Go to: Sell menu
  2. Hover Over: New Window >
  3. Select: Basic
