airpod pro (usb c) battery status doesn

Does anyone know how to display the battery status of the latest (usb c) AirPods Pro on an iPhone8 plus?

it appears that Apple have made the the latest AirPods incompatible with older devices (strangely, they don’t tell you that when you buy them🥴)

Hey CaractacusPotts,

Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities. Check out the following section "Check the battery percentage" for steps on viewing the battery status of your AirPods: Charge your AirPods and learn about battery life - Apple Support

Check the battery percentage

You can check the battery percentage of your AirPods with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Check the battery percentage on your iPhone

Open your case lid with your AirPods inside and hold your case close to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Wait a few seconds to see the charge status of your AirPods.

Use the Batteries widget on your iPhone to check the battery percentage

You can also check the charge status of your AirPods with the Batteries widget on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The charge for your case appears only when at least one AirPod is in the case.

We hope this helps.

Take care!

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately none of the above helps. With the latest AirPods (USB C version) the AirPods graphic does not appear on an iPhone 8 (plus) when you open the lid of the box and the battery widget does not show the AirPods graphic. Also, the graphic is not present in the AirPods section of the bluetooth connections (under settings). Apple have removed the compatibility of the battery status with older iPhones from the latest AirPods - the previous version of AirPods (with a lightning connector) do work as you described.

If anyone with an old iPhone wants a pair of AirPods I suggest you get them from a third party vendor (e.g. Amazon) before they sell out (alternatively you could spend the best part of £1000 on a new phone)
