What ethical hacking VM software would one recommend when using Mac?

I purchased a network security & Pen-testing online course in cyber sec.

The course instructor is talking about downloading "BackBox" to run a VM and other software but I have serious trust issues trusting software, tools etc. when I know nothing about the software an individual may be talking about, what the software does and so on.

Any tips or is anyone familiar with Backbox & VMWare?

I know apple is sealed pretty tight, but I'd hate to make an uneducated decision, click, download and ruin my first Mac.

If your Mac is a newer with Apple Silicon processor, most VMs do not work on those. More details about your computer can help us make recommendations approprtie to your equipment. Otherwise all we can do is give general advice.

"About this Mac..." should show the processor type:

"M1" or "M2" indicates the newer Apple "unified" processor that has VM developers struggling.

"Intel" indcate yours will be more compatbiel with VMs.

VMWare Fusion free is great. I've got it running Windows 10 and Linux Mint on both Monterey and Sonoma with no problems.
