Set Mail Read Delay - Settings to manage when messages are marked as read

With earlier versions than Sonoma Mail I have used a PlugIn called Mail Act-On from SmallCubed to delay my email read action, so I can go through my emails without having them all marked as read. A 5 second delay worked for me. With Sonoma PlugIns in Mail are no longer supported.

Does anybody know a trick or tool how to delay the mail read action?

I have avoided updating to Sonoma purely for this reason. Is there any explanation from Apple as to why there is no option to keep emails marked as unread when using the preview pane but not actually opening them? It makes no sense to me, and it's time-consuming to have to keep marking them as unread when you happen to scroll past them to get to one that you want to open first.
