All calls go straight to voicemail, even if they’re in my contacts

For the last several days anytime someone calls me it goes straight to voicemail, even if they are all in my contact list

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • iOS 14 & older: Go to Settings/Do not Disturb. Turn it off if it is on. Also turn off Scheduled. With both off none of the other switches there matter.
    • iOS 15: Go to Settings/Focus, and verify that all focus settings are disabled.
    • iOS 16: Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

I was having this issue and none of the setting updates in these replies worked for me. I finally figured it out! I have a Mac that has special administrative controls on it. I was signed into my apple account on the Mac when updates were pushed that blocked FaceTime. When my phone rings, the MacBook offers to pick up the call via facetime for just an instant, then I see an app error because FaceTime can't be used. This was hanging up my calls anytime I was in the house and within the reach of my WiFi network. So I went into my phone's Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices and turned off my MacBook as an option. All calls are coming through now! If you have another Mac device anywhere that might be trying to pick up calls, turn these settings off. I hope this helps you all!

All or most of my calls were being first answered by VM but then a quick redial would come in as a regular call.

In my case it seems to be a T-Mobile specific issue; Under Settings/Phone/Call Blocking and Identification, they have an option to 'Silence Junk Callers'. It was on. Turning it off allowed calls to come straight through.

The junk calls were coming from my wife and many others, all of which were in my contacts.

What worked for me is turning off "Settings/Phone/Calls on Other Devices". "Wi-Fi Calling" can still be on. I'm on ios 17.6.1, iphone 15 Pro Max. Things that did NOT work for me:

  • Turning the phone on and off
  • Resetting the newtork settings "Settings/General/Transfer/Reset/Reset Network Settings"
  • Any other adjustments to settings that effect inbound call processing

At my age of 83, I had some time in the past added an app to stop calls from ringing my phone that were not in my contact list. I had totally forgotten about it when I got an Iphone 15. Once I dug thru my apps and found the culprit and deleted it all is well! Take a look at your apps list. If one is about call selections in contact list, either adjust it or delete it!
