Receiving multiple text messages from a single contact

I am receiving repeat texts from one contact—as many as 12 of the same texts one after another

Just so we are on the same page, are these regular text messages or iMessages? Here's how to tell the difference: What is the difference between iMessage and SMS/MMS? - Apple Support
