Just to answer this part of your question. if you have the level of brightness set for a normally lit room, "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" will adjust the backlight level down in a darker room to match the same level of brightness.

or…

If you adjust the backlighting level in a dark room, it will adjust the level up in a bright room.
