My current operating system is macOS Catalina 10.15.7 My computer says I need a software upgrade, although I have the Automatic Upgrade option checked. I try to upgrade, but just get the spinning wheel. I entered my password

My Mac Air will not upgrade my Operating System. I currently am using macOS Catalina 10.15.7 I keep getting the flags that say I need a software upgrade, but am not having success. What do I need to do?

I understand Software Update is stuck at "Checking for updates..." with no end in sight.

This is a known bug. Several workarounds have been proposed, such as restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and checking for updates while in that mode, and / or resetting NVRAM. Try both.

Hi there!

You can upgrade to macOS Monterey 12. Using this Apple Support article, How to download and install macOS - Apple Support, choose to download Monterey 12 (found under the "use the App Store" section).

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac. If you have an external storage device, you can use it to back up your Mac with Time Machine.

Hope this helps!

My Mac Air Pro is from 2015. I went the route you suggested , and when I go into Software updates, the wheel just keeps spinning. Does that mean my Mac may not be compatible with newer operating systems? What I really need to do is update my browser (Safari) and I do not know how to do that without updating the Software. Is there another way to update Safari?
