Every time I try to add a contact to a text message group I get the following message: Creat a New Group? Contacts can only be added to a new MMS group with the same members." Then it gives me a choice to click New Group or Cancel

I have a group chat that goes back to 2014 with me and two other people; one of them had another phone number for awhile and this three-way chat was with that number; I try to create a chat with the same two people but with the new phone number; it doesn't even need to be the same thread, but I also don't want to lose the old thread; as an aside, this is now showing up with green bubbles, even though we all use iphones; But even when I click on the person's new phone number, it takes me to the same thread, and sends the texts to his old number which he rarely checks as is connected to Google Voice; so he's getting really annoyed and blocked my number on his Google Voice, and I'm getting really annoyed because I don't want to delete the number from contacts as I'm not sure what is going to happen to the thread; so I tried to just add his new number to the group, but then I get the "Create a New Group? Contacts can only be added to a new MMS group with the same members."; I don't know whether or not to click yes or not, because I don't know what that would do. I might change nothing, it might do what I want, or it might wipe out the old thread. Can anyone tell me definitively what would happen?
