Missing Cat - Air Tag

My cat went missing last Monday evening (16/10/2023). He was wearing an Apple AirTag. This has updated a few times on a busy rural road, just outside our village. Whenever I go the area, and in the spot where it says it last updated, I cannot get a precise location. I’m aware that it needs to come into close contact with another Apple Device with Bluetooth to update. Given the volume of traffic down this road, it doesn’t update all the time. Before yesterday, I had nothing for two days and then 2 in 6hrs. . I’m out of my mind with worry and don’t know what else I can be doing to try and get a precise location. I know now that I shouldn’t have used an AirTag, and am beating myself up with this. I’ve done all the suggestions that Apple have on the Find My App and toggling location services on and off.

Please, please does anyone have any suggestions?

Your precision is simply being limited by the lack of devices in your area to transmit the precise location. One suggestion is to organize a search party by gathering as many people you know with Apple devices and start searching from the most recent location. This would increase the likelihood of a close contact allowing an update on your phone. There is no other way to increase the chance of a precise location by changing any of the settings on your iPhone.

I know vets can tag dogs with an RFID chip and the serial number in that chip can be looked up on a national database to help get in touch with the registered dog owner. Same deal for cats? Any collar band with your address or phone number?

That seven days is a long time for a cat to miss TLC at home. Exercising particular caution, you might walk both sides of that road to ensure your feline friend was not struck and thrown off the road. Depending where you live, there is also the possibility of predation away from Bluetooth or Internet signal. And if stolen, the first thing to go would be the Air Tag. None of this comforting news, but not off the table either…
