along with stumpy1946's reply, an SD card should not allow you to insert it "upside down." it will only go in while in the correct orientation.

Straight in and straight out. That's pretty much it.

But cards and modern Macs just don't seem to play well together.

Before pulling it out physically, eject it systematically.
