I have obtained the app password from google which is supposed to allow me to get my gmail into Mac Mail. Can find nowhere to enter this password in my my google account,It seems many have this problem.Solution most welcome as about to give up on gmail but want to avoid if possible.

You have to delete the Gmail account and add a new account using the "Add Other Account" option (or something similar depending on the version of macOS you use), not the "Google" option. You'll then be able to enter the app password.

thanks but when I try that still get the wretched error 400 pop up
I keep receiving an Error 400 from Gmail in the Mail app on Mac
