Personal videos to icloud storage

How do I take personal movies that i took and stored on dvds and transfer them to the icloud? When i have them on my mac and want to import it says file not supported.

You would first have to "rip" them from the DVD, that is convert and save them as a file that Photos understands. One such app for that job is Handbrake.
