Muffled audio message with iMessage but not on voice notes

When I record an audio message of my iPhone it sounds like there’s loads of background noise. Someone suggested cleaning the top phone speaker but I can’t see anything to clean

Microphone won't work on iMessage App for audio messages My iPhone microphone is working on every app except for iMessage. It sounds extremely muffled when I use the audio message function. If the microphone is not working as expected on your iPhone, you can use the following to continue isolating and troubleshooting this issue If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working.
