MacOS Sanoma 14.0 - Safari 17.0 “Cycle through Windows” function is removed.

Hi,


After the last Safari 17.0 update the “Cycle through Windows” does not function anymore.

Adding it to the Keyboard-app shortcuts it no work-around.

It does not show up in the (top) Windows-menu.


for me it was bound to key-shortcut CMD-‘tilde’ 


Anyone know if this is going to be fixed ?

or where to bug-report this ?


i’m really missing this MacOS-wide function.

It does work in other applications like Finder, Pages, Numbers, Mail, ….

The issue is (sadly) still there,

found some new behaviour:

When you open Safari with multple windows, 

Make a Safari window-active and open Spotlite-search (Command-space)

Now cycle through the Application-windows with Command–Grave accent (`)

Trying it without does not work.


I’ve figured a work-around,

The keyboard layouts I’ve had from the previous MacOS 13 where ‘US international - PC’ and ‘NL’ (Dutch)

Switching between both languages also changes the the App-window-switching behaviour.


I’ve added a new Input-source language:

System Settings > Keyboard > [Text input / Input sources] Edit > Add “English - U.S.” (US)

The ‘US international - PC’ icon changes to (US-PC) and there’s a new one (US)


Using US-PC the switching does not work.

Using US the App-switching does work and has no issue’s 


Before the upgrade I didn’t have any issue with US-PC keyboard,

I dunno if it’s classiefied as a bug in MacOS.


Any know where to create a bug report for this ?

Hi ArnoCS,


Are you attempting to switch between the windows of the app you're using? If so, use Command–Grave accent (`). That keyboard shortcut, along with others, are listed here: Mac keyboard shortcuts


If the shortcut isn't working as expected, try restarting your Mac. Sometimes a simple restart can fix unexpected issues.


If the issue continues, try testing the issue in safe mode. This will start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening, which could help narrow down the cause of the issue. This article will walk you through the steps: Use safe mode on your Mac

If you're using a Mac with Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac. As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.
3. Select your startup disk. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name.
4. Press and hold the Shift key, then click the “Continue in Safe Mode” button below your startup disk.
5. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

If you're using an Intel-based Mac
If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac.
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac. 
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window. If you can't start up in safe mode, make sure that your Mac isn't using a firmware password.

Creating a new Admin account on the Mac, and temporarily switching over to that account to see if the same issue occurs can be helpful. That will determine if there may be something in the current account causing the issue or if it's system-wide on the Mac.

Thanks for those details. Since the issue doesn't occur in safe mode:


"Leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then try to reproduce the issue. If the issue doesn't return, it may have been resolved by the other things that safe mode did at startup, such as checking your disk and clearing caches.

If the issue returns, it is caused by a login item or other software that safe mode prevents from loading at startup. In that case, remove login items to find out whether a login item is at fault.

If a login item is not at fault, your old user account may contain other software that is incompatible, including certain software that loads at startup. To confirm this, you can add a user account in Users & Groups settings, then log in to that account and test again. The new account won't have the same settings as your old account, but you can create those settings again.

If nothing else works, reinstall macOS. Reinstalling macOS doesn't remove your personal files, so you can do it whenever you need to.

If you still can't resolve the issue and need help, please contact Apple Support."

Thankyou for the extensive reply, indeed it's the Command-Grave shortcut.

It only occurs with Safari.

I indeed meant 'switching the windows of the app'.


I've done the 'Safe mode boot' before I send this community post with MacOS 14.0


Some strange behavior I noticed just now:

Open Safari, select the any menu and leave the pull-down open.

Press the Command-Grave and the Windows.

The "Cycle through Windows" functions normaly.


And in a virtual machine

MacOS ventura 13.2.1 / Safari 16.3, functions normally

Updated it to MacOS Sanoma 14.1 / Safari 17.1, functions normally


I've updated to MacOs Sanoma 14.1 today, will do another 'Safe boot' after this post.

Just done that, after the 'Safe boot', in the seperate account Safari has normal behaviour.

The pull-down menu glitch doesn't have 'strange behavior' does not occur anymore, it's non functional anymore.


Dunno if it's possible to set aside the current Safari settings and preferences in 'Library' and to put it back later.

Last message I wrote a bit badly,

The seperate account does not have the issue.

The 'Safe Boot' does have the issue.


I disabled all login-items and applications that start with login.

Disabled all Safari extentions.

Safari has configured multiple profiles


Shutdown and Safe-boot, I've checked the disk fully with 'first-aid' commands.

Disabled all login-items

Disabled most launch-agents (via cleanmymac x)


Before reboot to 'safe-boot', I disabled the keyboard-shortcut itself (found under keyboard :)

Forgot about that after returning to 'normal-boot', re-enabled it and the pull-down menu glitch returned.


I was just repeatedly selecting the menu and pressing the Command-Grave

After selecting the pull-down menu twice (open/close) and then Command-Grave,

it suddenly started working!!


Dunno if that was the resolving factor probably the steps above resolved a lot too.


Other thing I was thinking about:

The removal of Safari settings and preferences in 'Library', hoping it's restorable via Time Machine.

For me reinstalling MacOS is not an option, so much application setting that need to be restored.


I noticed with the Disk utility first-aid log's,

"Checking snapshot 1 of 11 (com.apple.TimeMachine..."

Any one know how to clean up those snapshots for a fresh Time Machine start?

Somehow the 'switching the windows of the App' while using Safari

with keyboard shortcut 'Command–Grave accent' stops working.


A workaround I've discoverd is pressing key combinations

Holding the Command-key and press-releasing the keys Space-bar / Shift / Option / Control at random.

And suddenly the Safari starts switching windows within the App again.


(remembering this from windows a sticky-key bug that is still there sinds '95)



I will try to figure out the exact combination
