Exchanging Headphones

Bought Headphones online (Beats Headphones) and need to exchange them. I bought them as a gift for my daughter in law and they are a little big on her so, wanted to exchange, but when my daughter in law took them to exchange at local apple store, was told purchaser (me) had to bring them and exchange? Can I get someone to do this for me without me having to drive to their house which is 5 hours from me.
