Post-service, recurring dents or chips in MacBook Pro M2 display

Hello,

I've had my screen replaced twice under warranty due to these smalls chips in the screen. It's a spec of dust/dirt that gets imbedded into the display when it's closed.

I take care of my laptop, wipe it down with a microfiber, but after it happening twice while doing it doesn't seem to help it. I'm guessing somehow sand gets stuck in the keycaps then falls out onto the surface of the keyboard while storing.

The issue is covered under warranty but it's a pain to have this happen to an expensive laptop, on top of this it comes back from the repair center scratched.

I know many people say not to use screen protectors since its "not a touch display" and there is "no reason"

Along with, it will destroy a coating. But there are other reasons such as these small chips in the screen.

I have a FORITO M2-M1 16" Screen protector that is silicone based and seems to be of a plastic variant.

Is it safe?

Anyone find answers to help combat this issue ?

I've had both an original M1 laptop and now I have an M2 laptop for work and never had any issue like that with the display. In fact, I haven't seen the issue with any of the Apple Silicon Macs I've seen while supporting my organization's Macs, but I haven't had to support too many of the Apple Silicon Macs yet for hardware issues. Some of our users are not very kind to their devices.

I would avoid any screen protectors since they may damage the anti-reflective coating once the screen protector has been removed. Some of it may also depend on the adhesive & materials used in the screen protector. Chances are whatever is causing the Apple glass to become damaged will also affect any screen protector as well (perhaps in a different way, but it still may be an inconvenience).

It would be better to figure out how you are getting sand or other abrasive material on the laptop and prevent it. In the mean time you could make sure the keyboard is clear of debris before closing the display lid, then also only carrying the laptop in an upright position so any debris remains on the keys and not having the debris move onto the display when tilting the laptop or holding the laptop upside down when transporting it.

Keep in mind attaching anything to the screen will void the Apple warranty. This includes camera covers which are known to crack the glass of the Display where the repair will be considered accidental damage. Something to keep in mind especially during the warranty period.
