iMac Ventura 13.4.1(c) pop up Google LLC

my iMac running Ventura 13.4.1(c) has a new pop up alerting me that Google LLC has added items that can run in background; what does this mean? I have wandered through settings but found no reference to it or what it is doing?

That's just a new anti-feature that Apple recently added. You can find these items in Ventura's settings. Unfortunately, Ventura's new settings interfaces is yet another new Apple anti-feature. You'll have to use the search feature in settings to find. I think you can search for "login items" or maybe "background".

But regardless, you don't want to actually use that interface once you find it. Apple sprang this new capability on 3rd party developers. It allows end users to disable parts of 3rd party apps. But because developers didn't know this feature was coming, they had no way to prepare for it. You downloaded and installed these apps for a specific reason. Don't disable specific parts. That will cause problems that neither you, nor the people who originally wrote the app, can predict. It will be a few years before most 3rd party apps have adapted to these new, unannounced requirements from Apple.

If you see anything in that Ventura "login items" or "background" list that you don't want, you should properly uninstall the software completely. Please do not use any kind of "clean up" or "app zapper" tools. Due to yet another Apple anti-feature, using those kinds of tools will fail on certain low-level system modification apps. Instead of uninstalling the app, it will leave critical parts of the app still installed and running, completely out of control. Furthermore, they will be literally burned into the operating system. You won't be able to remove them by any normal means. Once that happens, the easiest solution is to erase the entire hard drive and reinstall the operating system. You can't even restore from backup as that will simply reinstall the out-of-control system modification. Unfortunately, many 3rd party apps do not include functional uninstallers, or uninstallers of any kind. I'm afraid there's no good solution that I can tell you about.

Got the same alert from Apple. System Prefs/General/Login Items/Allow in background shows "cleanup_installer" item from unidentified developer. Hitting the info icon takes me to launch daemons which include:

com.apple.installer.cleanupinstaller.plist

com.adobe.fpsaud.plist

com.apple.installer.osmessagetracing.plist

com.edovia.screens.connect.plist

com.google.GoogleUpdater.wake.system.plist

com.google.keystone.daemon.plist

com.malwarebytes.HelperTool.plist

com.malwarebytes.mbam.rtprotection.daemon.plist

com.malwarebytes.mbam.settings.daemon.plist

com.microsoft.autoupdate.helper.plist

com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper.plist

com.microsoft.OneDriveStandaloneUpdaterDaemon.plist

com.microsoft.OneDriveUpdaterDaemon.plist

com.teamviewer.Helper.plist

com.teamviewer.teamviewer_service.plist

The two google plists were installed yesterday. Are they legitimate and do I need to remove them? I do not remember downloading anything recently although I have used the Google Earth app regularly.

Thanks

Paul
