It appears FCP.co has shut down

As of today, FCP.co is redirecting directly to idustrialrevolution.com. Articles and forums on fcp.co are no longer accessible (unless you go to archive.org for the articles.)

I don't know what to say other than I will miss it.

Yepp, Peter has pulled 'the kill switch' (his words) to the web's biggest independent board/forum about FCPX. Very sad. Especially the forum with very helpful souls will be missed. And, selfish as I am, the FREE plug-ins are puff!gone.

Conc. the blog-post: worked for me 'til 5:30GMT, now a 404…

Guess, we will read a more elaborated reply from Peter in the near future.-

Thanks Ben!

I was able to finally get to the page, but the site is still really "iffy".

Safari has the best bet of getting through the site. FF and Opera... not so much. Still quite a few 404's even in Safari.

Here's a screenshot of Safari (left) vs Firefox/Opera:

The Safari version has Shopify software added, the others do not. I guess Peter is still working on it.

Some of the (fcpx) tutorials and blog posts are available already, but only in Safari and not all pages/links are available... or... some links to those pages work and others won't... (like "Next").

Looks like Motion will be largely ignored... sadly.

The site's loading for me now.

Basically, it's a combination of: "...it is very hard to run a news site about a product when there isn't any news!" and, "...the old problem of the cost and effort of running a site compared to the return" apparently.

He says that for a majority of the site's life industrial revolution's "sales have underwritten the cost" of the FCP site. He mentions the blog section of the IR site will still have content added.

Karsten! Good to see you back here! Sorry about the circumstances.

I had several (paid!) articles published on fcpco that have also evaporated. I don't know how good they were (I've learned a good bit more since I wrote them) but Peter kept them up for several years. Google being what it is, I'm going to miss the inbound links (from a more trafficked site) those articles provided me now that they're gone. I might be able to re-post them, but the benefits wouldn't even be close to the same. Because of Google, I was forced to remove all the links I had going to fcpco (it would have been nice to have a "heads up" in advance). [Dead links will land you in Google "jail".]

I guess I can't be surprised. The forum looked like it was suffering from neglect (the "word-wrap" issue which should have been a simple fix... that wasn't being fixed). I know several people were concerned Peter might not have been well because of it from a recent thread (COVID, Spherico disappearing, etc.) I'm glad he's apparently okay.

I hope his new "strategy" works well for him... but he may be losing a lot of "friends" in the process... at least a lot of people who would "hang around".

Me, personally, I make ALL my own templates... so I have no reason to visit idustrialrevolution (or any other "competitor"). FCPco was a kind of crossroads where different people could meet in neutral territory... if you know what I mean. It was a bit different than this forum! Somewhat unique.

Any site trying to fill the forum gap left by fcpco now would be years, and years behind...

"WHATEVER HAPPENED TO FCP.CO?

October 24, 2023

Good, question, hopefully this short blog will answer a few queries about the life and eventual closure of the best Final Cut Pro website.

The site ran for over 12 years, it started before Final Cut Pro X was released and surfed the wave of creation, innovation and finally in the latter years, frustration.

First of all, it is very hard to run a news site about a product when there isn't any news! Although there are some very active individuals in the FCP ecosystem who make a lot of noise, there isn't much happening these days.

That might be because there are hundreds of thousands of happy FCP editors out there that just get on and edit. It might be because everyone has bought every FCP product they need. Or have the majority of editors shifted over to Premiere and Resolve?

Secondly, it is the old problem of the cost and effort of running a site compared to the return. Although we had a few great advertisers who worked with us for a long time, there were a lot of companies who wanted a lot for nothing. That doesn't pay the bills. We were in fact quite shocked by the rudeness of a few individuals when asked for help after promoting their products/services for free for a number of years.

Over the last 18 months our hosting became a problem. What started off as a brilliant home for the site, lost all of its peripheral services and scheduled maintenance that made the site tick over. So it was either move the site to a new host that had better customer care, or close.

So, why is the explanation of the closure on this website? Because, for the majority of its life, Idustrial Revolution's sales have underwritten the cost. We were in discussion with a few parties about taking over the site, but they all eventually fizzled out.

It breaks my heart to close the site, I still believe FCP is the fastest and most creative NLE out there, but the industry doesn't share the same opinion. At one point Apple had a massive share of the NLE market with FCP7. FCPX never really recovered from the disastrous launch and Premiere (as bad as it was/still is) filled the vacuum.

Finally, chapeu to a few of the people that made the site the success it was. Thank you to David R, Sam, Ronnie, Roger, Philip & Gregg, Iain, Oliver and of course Karsten who without his daily help, the Forum would have died under a mountain of spam.

All is not lost though, I will add content to the blog section on this site. So please come back, you might even like one of our plugins!

Hi Fox,

yepp, I had to decide, to post here, or being the Janitor at FCP.CO… typing is not my sports anymore.

EEEEKS!!! Your 4part article about OnScreenControls - a classics, poof, gone! As you know I'm a fan of OSCs. You lifted all the secrets of these nasty to program/easy to use gremlins.... <arghgh>

… just one of the many examples, which demo the absolute need of that site. The 3D objects based on fonts, the subtitles advice, the bug reports, the.... omg! All gone! No fun…

Thanks Ben, for the copy of the Peters blog… I missed to make screen-grab.

For me fcp.co was golden. It was a community I referred to when I needed help as a newbie on FCPX. It was a place to keep track of updates. It was a place to try out free plugins. It was a place to eavsdrop on all the interesting chit chat with general editing. At some point the ads actually had some value. The forum part was extremely valuable. The articles were amazing and informative. And to top it all off some years back before COVID I actually won a ticket via fcp.co to the FCPX Summit and got a chance to go to Cupertino. We met, we mingled and it was an excuse for me to fly to California. I could easily say I grew up with fcp.co... and met most of the faces behind the names. what a great adventure and so sad to see it go...

What I'd like to see would be for someone to take over the site with PW as a senior advisor, continuing the old database in to the future... what do you all vote???

It appears FCP.co has shut down
