Can't open finder or local files after installing Sonoma 14.0

After installing this update I can't do anything locally on my computer like open files or even finder windows. will there be a fix coming for this soon? It's a 2021 Mac book pro with M1 chip.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.7

Have you tried rebooting the computer? A simple reboot can fix a lot of odd issues.

If a simple reboot does not fix things, then try booting into Safe Mode to see if you have the same issues, or whether it allows you to perform those tasks. If Safe Mode works, then it means you have some third party software installed which is interfering with the normal operation of macOS. Typical culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software....none of which are needed on a Mac.

Also, make sure all of your third party apps are fully up to date and are all fully compatible with macOS Sonoma.....sometimes it can take third party developers months to update their apps full compatibility with a new major version of macOS (assuming the app is still being actively supported).

Disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

A Few Thoughts on This:

  • View “Force Quit”:

Go to: Apple menu, Select: Force Quit...

Viewing the items in Force Quit, is anything running? If so, open the application and close it. See if it can then be safely removed.

  • Any Security Software Installed?:

If you have Security Software installed, then that may be scanning this hard drive consistently. If installed, uninstall it, using an uninstaller.  Security Software just gets in the way on a Mac, and this is a pure example of how and why. Ask the developer of the Security Software which version of the uninstaller is the correct one to use.

  • Is Time Machine Backup Used:

Is Time Machine currently backing this computer up? If it is set to automatic, then it may be backing up your computer constantly to this hard drive. So, let the backup process complete, and then disable automatic for backup
