Selecting an area for screen shot
How to select and area on the screen and take a screen shot of that area? I used to be able to do this with Shift-Command-5. However Shift-Command-5 now highlights the entire screen.

Shift-Command-4, then click and drag the area to be selected.

You have to change which icon you use.
Do you have "Remember Last Selection" checked in "Options" when you press command-shift-5?
You're welcome. I don't know why that would happen. It doesn't with my Sonoma installs. As noted above, shift-command-4 works.
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately that's how it used to work. Now when I do Shift-Command-5 my entire screen turns transparent bluish and I am unable to access the screen shot editing tools, as shown in the link you provided
Thanks. That works
FWIW, that doesn't answer your question however.
True, but it solves my problem.

Not exactly. You shouldn't have the problem to begin with. It just avoids your problem.
So how do I find the solution to the "bluish" screen which prevents access to the editing tools?
WAIT! It's working properly again. Shift-Command-5 is working. Go figure! No bluish screen, no camera icon. All just fine.
Thanks for your help. Problem solved however it happened.
You're welcome
Well that's good. 😎
