how to erase data from old iPhone

I have already transferred all of my data from my old iPhone to my new one, but I still need to erase the data from my old phone before returning it. I've followed the steps such as: Settings>General>Transfer/Reset>Erase All Content..>etc. but after entering my Apple ID, I get a message saying the 'Verification Failed, the operation couldn't be completed'

I no longer have service on the old phone, and SOS is the only icon next to the battery level. Is there another way to delete the info off of the phone before turning it in.

The phone needs to be connected to the Internet to complete the erase process. Have you tried a Wi-Fi connection?

Contact your Carrier, being SOS Mode is On:

Being in SOS Mode, contact your carrier, seeing if they can assist you with briefly giving you services. SOS means that you do not have Cellular service at this very moment, but you do have the option to make emergency calls. So, contact you Carrier to get your services back up and running.
