How to permanently make finder columns as wide as longest filename in Mac OS Sonoma

When I open a finder window the columns default to a very narrow size. Each time I open a window I have to adjust the columns.

I had found this older solutions stating that while double-clicking at the right of a column will quickly resize the column to fit the widest file name. But holding "option" while dragging a column width sets that custom width for every future Finder window.

This does not work in Sonoma. Help please!

Good luck with that....

I have never had the Finder adhere to any of those described methods.

Nothing distinct about Sonoma in this regard.
