iPhone 15 Pro Max makes a repeated sound when charging

I just upgraded to 17.1 and now my iPhone 15 Pro Max makes a repeatable sound and wave on my iPhone when charging. How do I turn off this feature?

I think I've figured out the issue—it's an AirDrop bug. For me ... it's my Apple Watch Ultra v1 trying to AirDrop something to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I have also recreated the issue with both devices not even on a multi charger. And I can replicate it multiple times.

After restarting my iPhone I was getting a message to bring "the devices" closer together to "complete the AirDrop". Though I'm not sure the message may have flashed in my Dynamic Island. And I could only reproduce it when restarting my iPhone and putting it back on the charger next to my watch.

So if I went into AirDrop settings and turned off " START SHARING BY : Bringing devices together" the "Rainbow Wave & Stars" stopped it happening on the charger. If I turned the setting back on while both devices were next to each other the wave & sound happened immediately.

I could also get the wave to happen even if both the watch & phone were off the charger and right next to one another. Very odd.

At one point I did something & the Rainbow and Stars wave was happening on the watch and not on the iPhone. WHAT???

This is definitely an Apple AirDrop issue. If you don't use AirDrop just uncheck "Bringing device's together." That will stop the bizarre problem until Apple can fix it.

And for the guy who turned his iPhone to landscape, stopping the phone wave ... that makes total sense. The phone & watch are far enough away from each other to stop the bug.

And it is a bug. I'll be calling Apple to report it tomorrow.

Funny thing is ... normally when I charge my watch & iPhone for the night I put the phone in Airplane mode so I don't get calls in the middle of the night. For whatever reason, tonight I forgot to put it into Airplane mode & the wave happened.

Pretty wild! And a bit scary too.

So y'all aren't hallucinating!

Ive been an Apple/Mac consultant for 20+ years. I do know how to troubleshoot. Took a bit to figure it out, but at least I got it to stop. 👍

It would be pretty easy to see if it's your iPhone (doubtful) or the charging stand (more likely). See if you can get your hands on a different charging stand, like maybe borrow one from a friend to try. If it doesn't happen on another stand, you've got your answer. I stopped using such stands a long time ago as they were simply inconsistent or better said, problematic. So I moved to MagSafe Charging, which is consistently perfect every time I charge my phones. I have a MagSafe charger at home and at my office.

Considering that there are more non-MFi and Apple Certified charging stations (and accessories in general) out there than there are MFi ones it is not remotely surprising the issue can occur for people using various ones. People choose those options for various reasons versus buying something they know was certified by Apple (not necessarily an Apple made option but properly certified to meet Apple’s performance standards)…but they need to understand that puts them at risk for experiencing quirks and issues. It’s not realistic to choose something that doesn’t meet Apple’s performance standards and then think the problem is the phone and something Apple should fix. Just because something says it will work with your device doesn’t mean it will work the best or properly. Now if the issue happened on every wireless charging station you try (including MFi ones) that’s completely different but it doesn’t seem like anyone experiencing this is actually using a certified MFi/Made for iPhone station.

If it were an Apple issue it would be something you could easily replicate no matter what charging method you use or across every wireless charging device you use. Unfortunately…all reviews on Amazon aren’t legit (being a product tester and reviewer for different brands and products I have personally been approached to post fake reviews for brands I have never worked with on Amazon in exchange for compensation which I always refuse. To try and make the review appear more legit the brand offers to send a gift card for the purchase amount so you can make a verified purchase. Then you review it with a positive review and they will pay you via PayPal. Just an FYI for people that rely on the reviews to make a purchase) so just because you see 5700+ happy buyers doesn’t necessarily mean that is the truth. Not saying this is absolutely what this brand has done but it’s a very common practice with some of the low cost brands that offer super low prices for products that are typically priced much higher. Regardless…you can easily determine if it’s truly your phone or if it’s the station you are using by the things I mentioned in my previous post. It’s very unlikely that it’s the phone or an Apple issue though. It’s an extremely bizarre issue that would be occurring for far more people if it were a new bug. Of course it’s possible but doesn’t seem likely in this case.

FYI…go to the reviews on that product, read the 1 star and 2 star reviews. Just scanning through them seems to reveal quite a few issues with some saying theirs stopped working or started malfunctioning after a few weeks.

Happening to me too on an iPhone14. Definitely started after most recent update. Only occurs if both watch and phone are on charging station at the same time. It even happens when the charging station isn’t plugged in! It’s very annoying - the wave and the “beam me up” sound.

Seems like if it was a charging station issue, we’d all have to have the same charging station. Highly unlikely!

To the best of my knowledge that’s not something anyone could replicate. Curious how you were able to screen record an external issue if it’s related to charging (you didn’t specify if it was wireless or wired charging)….although I guess whatever it is caused the animation of the screen. You didn’t say if it continues when you are not charging for 10 mins. To ensure it’s actually related to charging. You may need to have Apple look at it because something isn’t right there at all if it’s not tied to an app you’re using or something.

Same thing is happening to me. iPhone 13 Pro Max. When i place on stand wireless charger while ultra watch is charging I get this very odd waving blurr motion that runs up and down the display. Plus a very annoying sound… Sounds like it is beaming up to an alien spaceship. If the watch is removed from charger it stops. This began after the iOS 17 updates.

It doesn't say what the charging rate is (for true MagSafe charing it should be 15W) and it doesn't say it's MFi certified, but I'm sure it might be a decent charging stand. Since it doesn't come with a charging brick, what watt brick are you using? I would hope you're using at least a 20w wall plug. And if you're not get at least a 20w brick for it.
