Apple Music Hi-Resolution Lossless Tracks Downgraded to Lossless on iPhone

A number of Hi-Resolution Lossless songs on Apple Music are no longer displaying as Hi-Resolution Lossless. In Settings, I have Hi-Resolution Lossless turned on and Dolby Atmos turned off.

Take The Beatles Abbey Road 2019 mix. The album shows as Hi-Resolution Lossless, yet Come Together shows only as Lossless, along with a few other tracks. This seems to be a recent change, as all tracks were once showing as Hi-Resolution Lossless.

This also only appears to be happening on my iPhone. My iMac still shows all The Beatles Abbey Road 2019 mix tracks as Hi-Resolution Lossless.

Is this a bug with iOS updates? Or did Hi-Resolution Lossless tracks truly downgrade to Lossless?

It has been doing this for several weeks now. The switching between lossless and hi res breaks gapless on Abbey Road. On the other hand, gapless audio is still messed up on two Steve Miller albums, fly like an eagle and Book of Dreams.

Hello mjtroy,

It sounds like it may be related to your connection speed. As mentioned in About lossless audio in Apple Music - Apple Support, "Streaming lossless audio over a cellular or Wi-Fi network consumes significantly more data."

In that case, checking and making adjustments to your cellular data settings may help. Check out the following guidance from View or change cellular data settings on iPhone - Apple Support.

"Choose cellular data options for data usage, performance, battery life, and more

To turn Cellular Data on or off, go to Settings > Cellular.

To set options when Cellular Data is on, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, then do any of the following:

  • Reduce cellular usage: Turn on Low Data Mode, or tap Data Mode, then choose Low Data Mode. This mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks when iPhone isn’t connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Turn Data Roaming on or off: Data Roaming permits internet access over a cellular data network when you’re in a region not covered by your carrier’s network. When you’re traveling, you can turn off Data Roaming to avoid roaming charges.

Depending on your iPhone model, carrier, and region, the following options may be available:

  • Turn Voice Roaming on or off: (CDMA) Turn Voice Roaming off to avoid charges from using other carrier’s networks. When your carrier’s network isn’t available, iPhone won’t have cellular (data or voice) service.
  • Enable or disable 4G/LTE: Using 4G or LTE loads internet data faster in some cases but may decrease battery performance. There may be options for turning off 4G/LTE or for selecting Voice & Data (VoLTE) or Data Only.

On iPhone 12 models and later with a 5G data plan, you can do the following:

  • Enable Smart Data mode to optimize battery life: Tap Voice & Data, then choose 5G Auto. In this mode, your iPhone automatically switches to LTE when 5G speeds don’t provide noticeably better performance.
  • Use higher-quality video and FaceTime HD on 5G networks: Tap Data Mode, then choose Allow More Data on 5G."

Kind regards.

Hello mjtroy,

We have a great support article that might help with this. Please take a look at it here: About lossless audio in Apple Music - Apple Support. Review this suggestion: "To get a lossless version of music that you already downloaded from Apple Music, just delete the music and redownload it from the Apple Music catalog."

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.

Thanks for the quick response. I should have clarified, my problem involves streaming on my iPhone. However, I did try downloading the tracks in question and they did show as Hi-Resolution Lossless.

All of my settings are for Hi-Resolution Lossless:

Why would the same track show as Hi-Resolution Lossless if downloaded, yet only show as Lossless if streaming?

Whatever is happening started somewhat recently. I have checked with others and they are experiencing the same problem.

Thanks again for the quick response. The additional guidance did not work. I always stream with wi-fi. Everything had been working fine until about a month ago and I have not made any changes to my set up. The others I have spoken with that have the same problem are connected on different networks.

Here is an example of the problem:

The album is Hi-Res Lossless.

The first track shows Lossless.

The second track shows Hi-Res Lossless.

Almost half the tracks of a Hi-Res Lossless album are showing as Lossless. It is always a problem with the same tracks too.

This is not occurring with all Hi-Res Lossless albums. It is also occurring with Hi-Res Lossless albums without Dolby Atmos. It feels like a bug.

If you stream Come Together on The Beatles Abbey Road 2019 Mix on an iPhone with the appropriate settings, does it show as Hi-Res Lossless on your end?
