iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

An unprotected iPhone screen carried in your pants pockets may not be hosted in as pristine an environment as you think. When pants are washed, some reside detergent is left, which then when dried can turn into microscopic crystals. In addition we live in a world with micro-sand particles, which can accumulate in our pockets. You can't necessary see them, but when they are brushed up against an unprotected glass screen, these teeny tiny particles become abrasives and can scratch your iPhone screen. This is why I personally NEVER keep my phone in my pocket. Instead, I keep my phone in a belt clip case, which places the phone face down so it can't be harmed by anything. And I also make sure to put a decent quality screen protector on my phone right out of the box, to ensure the screen can't be harmed. I find it more amazing, people will pay $1000+ for a phone and not spend a few dollars more to protect it.

While I'm not going to post any links to articles, there are a number of really good, not biased articles about the new glass formulas on modern iPhones and scratch resistance. Google them. Simply said, the newer formulas are intended to make the screens harder to break, which since Apple moved to this glass is quite apparent. But when you make glass harder to break, that doesn't mean it's harder to scratch. In fact the opposite is more common. Glass which can flex more to avoid breaking, can be easier to scratch. So, it's wise to use a screen protector and this becomes a non-issue.

That is an oversimplification. Please read my post that you responded to. As just one example where that is not true is “an hero”, which is the correct accepted usage. And the jury is out on “a history” or “an history”. Here are some links for guidance that have other examples:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/is-it-a-or-an

https://www.writing-skills.com/hit-or-myth-use-an-before-h-words

https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/896/when-to-use-an-and-when-to-use-a-with-words-begining-with-h

While your suggestion covers the most common situations and won’t get you into trouble, there is disagreement among grammarians, as I said in my first post.

Those examples prove the rule, not the exception. The h in “hero” is pronounced, which is why we say “a hero”, not “an hero.” And even in the links you provided it states that “an history” would not be correct. And again, the rule applies to the pronunciation of the word (i.e., dialects where “historic” is pronounced as “‘istoric”). Will there be an occasional exception? Like every other rule for the English language, yes, of course. But “an” in front of a word like “heart” would never be considered correct, unless you’re from a part of the world where it’s pronounced as “art” instead of “heart.”

you are contradicting yourself, you stated in another comment that apple has been using the same glass formula for the past 3 years and then you come on to say that the glass formula on 15 is easier to scratch but difficult to break ? So how is it the same ?

you keep mentioning to spend a few more bucks and get a screen protector so why not just put a cheap screen and put a high quality screen protector, with that argument, there was no need for more durable titanium body, use the cheapest material for the body and just get a high quality case to cover it. Is it really high quality when it needs additional protection all around. To be honest it seems like you haven’t used many iPhones, you mentioned to someone that they were lucky because their previous phones didn’t get scratches, no it just seems those screens were better. Try iPhone 13pro if you have one, the screen doesn’t get scratches easily and it doesn’t even break easily.

I am extremely disappointed to already see scratches on my 20 day old iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone XS Max that I turned in, although ancient, had no scratches and never had a screen protector. I now have an amFilm Screen Protector but cannot use the lens protectors because the ESR Hybrid Case with Stash Stand will not close with the protectors.

Will the lenses scratch as easily as the primary screen?

I really am at a loss for words. My beautiful new iPhone 15 which I have hardly used seems to have scratches over it. I am 70 years of age and this was a present. I have had iPhones and iPads since beginning. I met Steve jobs and Sir Jonathan Ives in the car park at Cupertino the year the iPad came out. I have photo to prove it. I love Apple products and so sad about these scratches. What do we do.
