"macbook boots to revocery after update: Hi there, general question, When ever I update my M1 Max Macbook it'll fully install and reboot to the recovery screen opting for me to recover or restart.. I choose to restart and it boots up as normal w/ the update installed. Is this normal? I've never had this issue with any other MacBook I've owned until this one and I'm just a little curious as to if anyone else deals with this as well"

So, Reinstall the macOS:

It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be, respectively. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support. Important: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

I think it's not normal. It could be possible your internal drive is something wrong. You'd better run FirstAid of DiskUtility as just check your drive.

When prepping an external hard drive to use as for Time Machine Backups for a Mac, you need to format it accordingly. For your macOS and model, you need to format the external hard drive as APFS. You can do so using Disk Utility.
