I know I can turn off notifications about myself being mentioned but I want to turn off auto mentioning people in messages. If I type a name I don’t want it to automatically mention that person. There doesn’t seem to be a way to do that.

To clarify, when typing a contacts name, do you tap the contact icon that appears above it? If so, that is another way to "mention" someone in a message other than using the @ symbol.
If you don't tap that name there, it won't activate the mention feature.
