Finder won't release file after preview (spacebar). Folder is then locked.

Previewing picture in Finder using spacebar locks the file.

If I wan't to remove or delete a Folder containing a png/jpg picture, which I have previewed using spacebar, it is not possible. It seems like it is keeping on pinging the file so it locks the Folder.

We are using PC server with Acronis Connect and working on Mac Pro computers.

We can't change to Mac server, because the main program used (Esko ArtPro) has Workflows which are not compatible to Mac.

Any solutions?

Viewing a file with Quick Look increments the file in use bit that the operating system checks and must be 0 before a folder containing the file is eligible for removal. Press the ESC key to close that Quick Look screen, and then click the Desktop to deselect the file icon in Finder.

The same holds true if you have changed directory into a folder in the Terminal as this also impacts the file in use bit too. If you are in a folder via the Terminal, walk back out of that folder before requesting that folder removal, either in the Terminal or from the Finder.

On Sonoma 14.1, I see no locked status of a file currently being viewed by Quick Look, neither in the Finder's Get Info panel, or from the Terminal.

I can't help but wonder if the issues you are running up against with folder locking is a side-effect of using Acronis Connect (current version?) and/or Windows together. I cannot test your scenario here as I have no Windows server. You might follow-up with Acronis support to explore this issue further.

I do have a Synology DiskStation whose operating system is Linux that serves AFP or SMB shares to my Macs or Windows Desktops. There is no other interventional software needed between the Synology and the mixed Desktops to view its files or folders. I can Quick Look an image or PDF on that mounted share and while displayed, there is no lock status on the viewed file or its containing folder.

Files are on a PC server. Acronis Connect is used to make PC server available from Mac OS.

When having a preview (by spacebar) in a Folder on PC server through Mac OS (we are working og Mac computers from PC server) Finder won’t release the file. Finder ping’s file when touching spacebar for preview. When touching spacebar again and leaving preview everything seems fine. Unfortunately Finder is still pinging so the file is locked and can’t be removed or deleted.

System administrator has to log into PC server through Acronis Connect and force Finder to quit pinging. Then file is released and can be moved/deleted.

Our system administrator can’t find any better solutions for this problem so it is killer for the daily working routine.
