iPhone has two main "types" of volume. There's your media volume, which controls how loud your device is with things like music and video, and there's your Ringtone and alerts volume, which controls how loud your notifications and ringtones are.

Normally, the volume buttons on your phone only affect the media volume, but if you enable the "Change with Buttons" option, it combines your Alerts and Media volume, so that the volume of ringtones and notifications will also be affected by your volume buttons.

Hopefully this helped!
