Mac Sonovo and Epson V550 Photo Scanner

I have borrowed an Epson V550 Photo Scanner for the sole purpose of scanning several hundred transparencies into my photo library. Can anyone tell me whether this scanner is compatible with Mac Sonovo as all my efforts so far seem to be inconclusive. The Epson website seems also rather vague. Thank you for any help. Chris

On the Epson website you will want to download the file: ICA Scanner Driver v5.8.12 for Image Capture

This is the driver for using the Image Capture app on your Mac. You may need to add the Scanner at  > System Settings > Printers & Scanner. If it already added, delete it and add it again after you install the driver.

If that does not work there is another driver that includes its own scan utility software: Scanner Driver and Epson Scan 2 Utility v6.6.45. This file was just released on 10/13/23 for Sonoma.

You haven't said what you've tried. I have an Epson V39 (cheaper, I think), and I use the Mac App "Image Capture." For the last scanners I've used, that has worked brilliantly without having to download drivers and such. I just plugged it in, and it worked. Well, the first time I plugged it into a hub, and it didn't just work! But with a good cable and plugging it in directly to my Mac Air, it worked right off.

Let us know if that helps or not-- could be useful to others to know.

I'm in a Cafe, right now, so I don't have anything plugged in. So Image Capture, for me, looks like this:

It says 0 devices. Sometimes you have to click on it to get it to list devices, but 0 means 0.

I'd try different cables. When I first hooked mine up, I used a USB cable from a previous scanner, and it didn't work. When I connected the cable supplied by Epson, it worked. My Mac Air M2 uses USB-c, so I have to use an adapter.

I don't know how old the V550 is-- I saw that it's not available anymore. It may require Drivers, and not all manufacturers are very quick making those available.

Are you using the Image Capture app that comes with your Mac or the Epson Scan Utility?

The Image Capture app does have the capability to choose where you want the image saved as well as the format of the image. I have experienced problems scanning directly into Photos so usually scan to a folder on my desktop, then drag all scans to the photos app. I usually use the jpeg format.

You can run this scanner from your iPad? That's cool-- I've never used my iPad to drive a scanner. We are now way into my level of ignorance, but have you used Sidecar to connect your Mac and iPad. You can use the Mac's trackpad to move the cursor over to the iPad, and you can move stuff back and forth between them-- very cool. If your iPad will run the scanner, you should be able to grab the files and drag them to the Mac for editing. Maybe.
