Don't assume that macOS will recognize that built-in monitor camera. I have a Logitech C920HD web cam parked on top of my LG 32-in 4K Ultrafine display connected to my M2 Mini Pro. The LG site has some nice displays at various price points.
Placing a "low budget" display on an M2 mini with its video capability is like placing plastic hub caps on a Mercedes.

This is absolutely the cautionary observation that I needed to read. I have a limited requirement (LibreOffice suite, mail, genealogy), but my current 27” iMac (late 2012) is too far behind the upgradeable OS curve now. I suspect the 24” stand-alone M1 iMac with plenty of storage might be quite adequate, and a better direction to go. I just liked the sound of the MacMini! Many thanks for you reply.
Make certain that any genealogy or other dependent apps that you use are stated on the vendor's site to be compatible with macOS Sonoma (macOS 14.*) and Apple Silicon hardware before you purchase a new Mac. That also means your current printer/scanner models drivers too.
LibreOffice has a dedicated Apple Silicon version (defaults to Intel) that you can select on their download site.
When I installed Go64 it reminded me that I had run this a while ago when I upgraded to Catalina, and everything I needed runs well - but thank you for recommending I do this check. Whilst I now start looking at the 24" desktop option, have you heard of Open Core Legacy Patcher? I have just stumbled across this, and it suggests that this would enable me to move up as far as OS14 on my existing platform (which I am reluctant to bin as it is 24Gb and 1TB - and still works a treat despite its age). I'm not looking for functionality, just wanting to keep up with security patches.
Even more valuable insight. Everything on my desk is 'legacy', and I hadn't got round to thinking I should be checking it out. Many thanks again.
The free Go64 application will provide you with a list of 32-bit applications and libraries on your 2012 iMac that won't be supported on macOS Sonoma (which only supports 64-bit entities).
