Why does Apple require new iPhone activation on one of the 3 "national carriers?"

I see no reason for limiting new purchases in this way. I'm using an MVNO. It's far more affordable than the exorbitant rates the big three charge. I have posted a similar question three times. I think it gets deleted. I'd upgrade to the 15 Pro Max in a heartbeat, but I can't see paying triple the amount I pay now - for excellent coverage on the Verizon network - to Pink, Red, for Blue just for the privilege of getting that new phone. C'mon Apple, stand up and answer a loyal customer's legitimate question.

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16
