Spotlight fails to open files in Finder if no Documents folder in Finder sidebar

I'm seeing a weird interaction between Spotlight and Finder. When the Finder sidebar does not include the Documents folder, Spotlight successfully finds folders and files, but cannot open them in Finder. Instead, Finder opens to my Home directory.

So, when the Documents folder is absent from the Finder sidebar, I search for some_folder in Spotlight and find it, and then use either return or cmd+return to go to some_folder in Finder. It just opens Finder in my home directory. Same behavior if I search for a file (e.g. some_file.pdf), and use the cmd+return shortcut to try to go to the file in Finder.

However, when the Documents folder is included the Finder sidebar (in Finder preferences > Sidebar > Show Documents is checked), Spotlight / Finder behave perfectly. Anyone else with this issue?

That is weird... My guess is that there may be some corruption in Finder preferences.

Try deleting Finder preferences and then relaunch the Finder.

In Finder, press Command-Shift-G and paste

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Drag the file to the trash.

Press Command-Option-Escape, select Finder in the list, and click Relaunch.
