First Aid has never been much good at repairing any Apple file system. Disk Warrior on the other hand performed miracles which saved us from having to start over every time. Alsoft has some great programmers.
I have used Diskwarrior on a backup drive and it was able repair it previously in MacOS extended journal.
Good to know. The newer APFS TM backups may be a different story though.
I did consider a HW issue but it's a brand new drive (yes those fail too) but until APFS file can be repaired it'd point it to that as the issue as if I erase the drive it works just fine. But disktutility shows errors that it can not fix.
Errors as opposed to Warnings? Unfixed Errors are definitely bad, but so far Warnings seem like you can just ignore.
It is unusual to see an APFS volume keep getting errors so quickly. Yes, APFS volumes do tend to get errors which First Aid is unable to fix, but it should not be too often. Seeing APFS errors reappear after erasing the drive/volume indicates some sort of hardware issue. Hard to say which hardware item is at fault, could even be bad power.
I do have SMART status detection software for hardware failures and it reads as good.
Do not always trust the summary status. For example Disk Utility's & macOS' summary "SMART Status" rarely ever reports a "Failed" status. Also be careful with the summary status of any third party apps when monitoring the health of an SSD since SSD's usually need to have the health report manually interpreted since not all errors are fatal. With hard drives any bad/pending sector increases usually indicate the drive should be replaced (so does a Load Cycle Count whose normalized "Worst" values are not nearing "1"). Some drive health attributes may not normally trigger a Warning or Failing status with the app, but the health attribute could still indicate a problem...like the Load Cycle Count...some brands of drives only allow for a very low Load Cycle Count (a few thousand) while other brands may allow for 800K. Normally the Load Cycle Count won't trigger a SMART failing status (depends on the app though).
Just out of curiosity what app do you use to monitor the drive's SMART health indicators? I only suggested using DriveDx since it has a free trial, can usually be run from the Downloads folder, and has a nice text report people can easily post here....some other apps format the report in a way which makes it hard for me to interpret since I do look at all the columns in the report as I normally just use the command line app to monitor my systems and the DriveDx report uses the same output. Plus I like all the details the DriveDx developer's provide on their website.
