Updating macOS Big Sur

Ok, I am having trouble updating my Word document to use this for college and I am unable to update my computer from 11.7.7 to 12 something. I am unable to do anything for my online college because of this, this computer has given me so many problems. I have never had an issue with my iPhone but every other item I had from Apple has been really upsetting me because it will not let me update. It just keeps spinning "checking for updates." I have re-started this computer and then started from scratch.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.7

wether or not you can upgrade to macOS 12 or later would depend on what exact model and year Mac you have. please use Apple Menu > About This Mac and let us know the year and model of Mac.
