Apple ruined “Read Now” in Books app in iOS17

“Read Now” used to be a place in Books where you could go to find books you, you know, want to read now. Apple has clearly decided that the proper function of the Books app is now not to help you read books but only to buy books.

Where it used to show a list of all of the books you’ve read recently, now it shows the one most recent book and a bunch of ads for books they want you to spend money on. Super happy to be peppered with invitations to buy Britney Spears’ memoir. “Read Now” is now basically indistinguishable from the Book Store tab. What’s the point of it even existing?

I’m with you. This update is terrible. When the “buy now” section is bigger than the reading now - it’s not about actually reading. For the first time I’m seriously considering dropping buying ebooks from Apple.

Agree. I came here to see if there was a way of somehow getting rid of the store when one lands on 'read now', which I basically use as my 'continue reading' list. I guess not?

All I can think of is making a collection of books I'm currently reading, but it would be much better if Books did it for me, that is, if there was a tab for this that wasn't dominated by the store.

Reading Now in IOS 17 is awful- I normally read or refer to a number of books/documents at any time. The tiny thumbnails displayed are useless- and all to make space for more retail. The Bookstore page is where I would go for this, not Reading Now. Just a shockingly bad update

This even surpasses the bookmark at the BOTTOM of the page for user frustration. I am thinking that Leigh7H is onto something: For the first time I’m seriously considering dropping buying ebooks from Apple.

I'm using iOS 16.6.1 on my iPhone, but 17.0.3 on my iPad.

I still don't understand why the Books app is of so low quality on the Mac, the iPhone and the iPad, system update after system update. There is still no way to manage metadata for either books or audiobooks, and it is even impossible to correct the name of the author on audiobooks when the reader's name has been entered instead of the author's.

Still no way to manage your library, still no way to even know where the books are stored on your Mac.

Please, Apple, give us a working Books app.
